Canine mRNA Immunotherapy IIT — Owner FAQ
The 10 questions owners ask most, answered clearly
Is canine personalized mRNA immunotherapy an approved product?
No. It is an investigator-initiated exploratory study (IIT) sponsored by PETcura: we analyze your dog's own tumor tissue and build a personalized mRNA immune formulation. It is an exploratory medical attempt, not a commercially approved veterinary product.
Why must sampling happen during surgery?
The vaccine is made from the dog's own tumor tissue. Surgery is the best moment to collect fresh tumor tissue: it must be frozen and shipped for sequencing promptly to preserve RNA quality. If the surgery window is missed, the opportunity to build a personalized vaccine is usually lost.
How much does participation cost?
Owners bear a small portion of the sequencing-related costs; the design and manufacturing of the custom mRNA formulation are fully funded by PETcura as study sponsor. The full cost structure is explained during enrollment evaluation by the study team and your veterinarian.
How long from sampling to treatment?
Several weeks: the tumor sample is sequenced and neoantigens analyzed, then the custom formulation is designed, synthesized, and quality-released by the mRNA research partner.
Is the vaccine safe?
The study has a strict safety framework: an LNP tolerance assessment before enrollment, in-clinic observation after every injection, and systematic monitoring with graded adverse-event management throughout the 12-week schedule.
Does mRNA immunotherapy change my dog's genes?
No. mRNA does not enter the nucleus and does not alter the genome — it only carries information to the immune system so immune cells can recognize the tumor.
Is efficacy guaranteed?
No. This is an exploratory study: enrollment, successful target identification, and efficacy are not guaranteed. It does not replace standard treatment — it is an additional exploratory layer on top of your veterinarian's plan.
What if we withdraw mid-study?
Informed consent documents explain withdrawal rules and cost handling before enrollment; natural disease progression is covered by specific waiver clauses. Please rely on the signed documents.
Which dogs may qualify?
Dogs with pathologically confirmed malignancy, assessed by a licensed veterinarian. The study is currently enrolling at partner hospitals in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Shenzhen, Shenyang, Chengdu, and Chongqing.
How do we apply?
Contact the study team via WeChat (petcura) with your pathology report; the team matches you with a partner hospital in your city, and a veterinarian completes the assessment.
